Previous Lectures: Ten Women and the Great Lake Ron Smith, ACA Coast Kayak Instructor Trainer and BCU Sea Coach 3 and co-owner of Black Parrot Paddling, LLC, will conduct this classroom session for those wishing to learn the necessary skills to be familiar with the basics of coastal kayak navigation. The course will cover the concepts of dead reckoning, piloting, use of a compass, familiarization with nautical charts and trip planning. Participants should bring a notebook, ruler (12" or 6"), base plate compass and their own refreshments. This session is a must for all novice paddlers and those unfamiliar with the prevention and consequences of hypothermia. Well there are dozens of manufacturers and hundreds of models and designs to choose from. River kayaks, recreational boats, touring boats and sea kayaks, with no one right boat for everyone. Topics will include boat design and its relation to the boats use and characteristics, proper boat fit, considerations of weight vs cost, speed vs. maneuverability, materials, maintenance, rudders vs. skegs and other features of kayaks.
